kristen barry vs. the man

blogs are terribly self-indulgent.

THE FOOD INDUSTRY IS SO FKD UP! everyone should watch ‘the future of food’ it talks how there are no rules to the way our food is produced in the agriculture industry because the bodies created for regulating food production (the fda & epa) are controlled by people who hold personal investments in the major food companies (the largest and most aggressive company, monsanto, is perhaps the most influential and destructive because of its lack of oversight)…

  • current fda deputy commission for food policy —- michael taylor (former monsanto’s senior counsel at king and spalding law firm) — he is responsible for the legislation enabling companies to produce gmo food without any kind of testing, regulation or labeling
  • current supreme court justice —- clarence thomas (monsanto’s lawyer for reglatory affairs)
  • former secretary of commerce —- mickey cantor (monsanto’s board of directors)
  • epa research ecologist —- lidia watrud (biotech researcher at monsanto)
  • former secretary of agriculture —- annie veneman (board of directors at calgene, which is owned by monsanto)
  • current secretary of agriculture —- tom vilsack (has ties with monsanto - just approved gmo alfalfa sprouts, which affect dairy and dairy since they are fed to cows. since it’s an insect pollenating plant, it WILL spread contaminate at a growing rate the rest of the alfalfa crops in the us)
  • former chief administrator of the epa —- william ruckelshaus (monsanto board member)
  • former secretary of defense —- donald rumsfeld (president of searle, division of monsanto)

this has basically paved the way for gmo foods to be produced without labeling, testing, or knowledge for the consumer. they’ve also taken advantage of the chakrabharty ruling (1980) that allows for the patents of gmo’s (as many others have done in the patenting of genes, produce, livestock, etc.) by patenting seeds that are not gmo seeds, but naturally occurring seeds that they happen to obtain and patent before anyone else.

‘monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food, our interest in it is selling as much of it as possible. assuring it’s safety is the fda’s job.’ - phil angrell director of corporate communication at monsanto
